Bull Run
We recently took a trip to Manassas and viewed the site of the Battle of Bull Run. Although we were herding our three small children, I did manage to learn enough to fill the gaps left by my public school education. For instance, there were actually two battles of Bull Run. Spectators came from Washington, DC to watch the event like a spectator sport, but when the North began to retreat there was panic as both troops and spectators began to flee the area. Thus ended the tradition of the Sunday picnic near the battlefield. And, Stonewall Jackson got his name from this battle. The statue depicting him on the battle field displays the quote, "There stands Jackson like a stone wall."
